Restrictions and Information
Please Read and Accept before submitting Fire Permit Application

1. A fire in the “open air” shall mean any fire out of doors not contained in an authorized incinerator including bonfires, beach fires, hand piled brush and yard waste fires. Hand piled brush and yard waste fires may not exceed 2 m (6 ft) in height and 3 m (9 ft) in diameter. Bonfires, beach fires and campfires may not exceed 1/2 m (20 in) by 1/2 m (20 in). Machine piled brush and waste materials fires resulting from land clearing, agriculture, logging, demolition/construction are regulated Provincially and a special permit is required. Information on machine piled open fires may be obtained from the Duty Officer at 250-252-0228 or on the TIVFD website at www.thetisislandfire.ca.

2. An “authorized incinerator” shall mean any metal or masonry container in good condition mounted on a non-combustible base, and fitted with a metal screen with a mesh no larger than 6 mm (1/4 inch) to restrict sparks and flying debris.

3. No permit is required for burning in the open air or authorized incinerator from November 1st to April 1st of the following year, unless local conditions are such that the Fire Chief must close the island to all open air burning. However, all open air fires are still subject to the restrictions of the provincially set venting index. Machine Piled burning requires an inspection and Provincial and local Fire Permit year round.

4. The permit holder or a competent person designated by the permit holder shall supervise and keep under control at all times any fire and ensure that all equipment and extinguishing agent necessary and required for fire control is available at the fire site from ignition to total extinguishment. Open Air Fires must be at least
   - 3m (10 ft) from dry grass, shrubbery, trees or wooden fence and 6 m (15 ft) from any building or structure
Authorized incinerators must be at least
   - 2m (6ft) from dry grass, shrubbery, trees or wooden fences and 4.5m (15 ft) from any building or structure

5. All fire permits may be inspected, suspended, withheld or cancelled at any time by the Fire Chief or Fire Chief’s Designate as per Section 10 of the Fire By-Law.
